Summary The Business Innovation Initiative (BII) is utilizing the MMOWGLI game to support a wide range of Navy and industry professionals exploring how best to achieve the Navy's new Open Systems Architecture (OSA) strategy. Aligning the Naval acquisition community to the new Open Systems Architecture strategy presents a complex set of problems with many stakeholders. We need to better understand the challenges and identify incentives in order to successfully meet the future demands of our Naval force. Broad collaboration using MMOWGLI to conduct brainstorming of new ideas and generating action-plan alternatives is expected to be essential for charting the way ahead for this major Navy-wide initiative.
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has sponsored a major project that has established the Massive Multiplayer Online Wargame Leveraging the Internet (MMOWGLI) project. This open-source Web-based software is developed at NPS and operates on NPS infrastructure supporting any user's Web browser. MMOWGLI utilizes social networking-technologies for rapid user-driven exploration of key questions through idea brainstorming, which then leads to focused action-plan generation. Multiple games have been run to perform innovative group analysis and collaboration on scenarios of interest to the Navy and other sponsors. NPS uses multiple proven low-cost, open-standards, open-source capabilities in concert, anticipating even broader use by a proposed community of stakeholder sponsors.
