Summary The proposed study is a follow up to the Sleep Patterns Longitudinal Study Performed on the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) Cadets in the Class of 2007. This new study will analyze sleep patterns and duration in the current classes of Cadets at USMA, the manner in which Cadets use their discretionary time, and the impact of sleep and discretionary time on Cadet performance. The study will be conducted in two phases. The first phase is a survey given to the current USMA Cadet population. The second phase will collect data on Cadet sleep and use of time. During the second phase, sleep and activity data will be collected on a cross section of the population (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors). In order to create a representative sample, participants will be further stratified based on gender and seasonal participation in athletics. The total number of Cadets in Phase 1 will be no more than 4000; the total number of Cadets in Phase 2 will be no more than 400. The results of this study are expected to be used by USMA leadership in making decisions about policies that impact Cadet schedules.
