Summary Variants of the SH-60 and MH-60 Seahawk are generally multi-mission helicopters that specialize in anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and other missions. They presently have a variety of short range weapons including Hellfire, 2.75 inch, and a 20 mm cannon, but lack long range standoff weapon. Our plan is to use Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to develop and examine concepts of operation for variants of the SH-60 and MH-60 Seahawk in one, or more, pertinent naval missions as part of a task force conducting SUW. Our focus is to determine potential tradespace considerations for the SH-60/MH-60 by assessing operational effectiveness of the overall task force for a particular mission, while determining important weapons design considerations in the SH-60/MH-60 that contribute most to that success. For example, we believe that increasing the weapons range capability of the SH-60/MH-60, possibly through the addition of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), may result in very positive effects on USN capability. Therefore, this research proposed investigating and quantifying the value of equipping the SH-60/MH-60 with NSM, and consider possible tactical and organizational changes that would allow for greatest operational success against a near-peer enemy as part of a SUW mission, carried out by a naval task force, such as a traditional Carrier Strike Group (CSG), or Adaptive Force Package (AFP) as part of the distributed lethality concept. Finally, we coordinated with Professor Jeff Kline, (CAPT (USN (ret)), as he suggested leveraging his Joint Campaign Analysis Class for this project by introducing this enhance capability into the students’ assessment process to gain an appreciation for a quantitative estimate of the military value.
