Summary We propose to develop efficient unstructured discontinuous Glerkin methods for global nonhydrostatic atmospheric modeling. As the horizontal resolution of numerical weather prediction (NWP) models increases to less than 10 km, it becomes possible and advantageous to model nonhydrostatic motions. The dynamics of deep convective clouds are nonhydrostatic and important feedbacks of these clouds on the larger-scale flow are difficult to parameterize. To at least crudely represent such clouds and other mesoscale processes, the equations set solved by global atmospheric models are currently transitioning from hydrostatic to nonhydrostatic formations.
