Summary The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will support Systems Engineering Research and Technology (R&T) in the advanced of space systems concept of operations and systems engineering methodologies. Concept of operations will consider the application of advanced technologies in the execution of space orbital and lunar space missions including human system interactions. Systems engineering methodologies will be advanced for the system engineering of these applications. This project consists of two major tasks that attempt to answer the following research questions. Question 1: What decisions can be left up to an autonomous system to make and what decisions must have concurrence from a human operator when humans are present in the operating environment? When must a human have intervention authority? Question 2: Are there cost effective approaches to improve the resilience of electrical microgrid infrastructure aboard future space stations and bases to ensure continued power delivery to mission critical loads? The two major potential benefits of this work are: 1) development of a command and control systems engineering framework that can be implemented on current and future autonomous systems that interact with humans; and 2) development of an energy resilience methodology for space stations and bases using systems engineering methods to protect the supply of power for mission critical systems.
