Back Use of PDE to Characterize and Analyze Causes of Army Attrition

|Summary||Losses after the Army's Initial Entry Training (IET) are an expensive problem, representing a substantial investment in training time. We propose to use the Person-Event Data Environment (PDE), a secure computer environment in which researchers can examine personally identifiable information in a consistent, safe, and controlled manner, to investigate attrition among active component enlisted personnel in the US Army. Specifically, we hope to identify the primary causes for losses after completion of IET. The ability to access medical data through the PDE should make it possible to build a much more complete picture of these enlisted who fail to complete their initial contract obligation. In turn, this should produce more accurate predictive models, which will allow the Army to identify personnel at highest risk of failure (so that preventive measures can be implemented) and to more accurately estimate the number of failures (so that proper recruiting targets can be set).|
