Summary The use of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to generate metal/alloy objects layer by layer presents multiple advantages over technologies that rely on machining or removing sections of a larger piece. AM can produce complex parts without waste of raw materials and promises to greatly reduce costs and increase efficiency of our supply networks. However, the metal/alloy objects generated still need post-processing operations in order to achieve the desired properties. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is a manufacturing step commonly used after the metal parts are printed to reduce the porosity. HIP involves the simultaneous application of high temperature and pressure to densify and improve the mechanical properties of the parts. This step is necessary in order to prevent the existence of flaws that otherwise will compromise the final properties acting as stress raisers. The research proposed herein will focus on characterizing the microstructural, compositional and property changes that parts suffer as result of the HIP processing conditions on parts provided by technical sponsor. NPS Faculty and students involved in the project will help sponsor design experiments to conduct a parametric study and determine the HIP treatment conditions. Parts will then be HIP by a third party and will be provided to NPS for evaluation. Deliverables will include an experimental design, data generated as result of mechanically testing the 3D printed - HIP parts and characterizing the parts using optical and electron microscopy, profilometry of sample’s cross sections and energy dispersive spectroscopy. A final report will summarize the optimal conditions for treatment of parts.
