Summary This proposal seeks to clarify the strength and fragmentation properties of reactive materials currently under consideration by DTRA for transitions to weapon systems. Our goal is to understand the dynamic strength and fragmentation of these materials to ensure they meet the requirements for integration into fielded warheads. Specific planned work includes Hopkinson bar and Izod impact studies, followed by post-mortem analysis of the microstructure and any material failure. Along with collaborators at NSWC Indian Head, we will collect post-shot debris from pig tests and explosive launch experiments, for analysis in the NPS materials facilities. Hydrocode simulations will be performed to better understand the wave dynamics and conditions during IHDIV explosive testing. Finally, these results will be integrated into an analysis of lethality and viability of these materials to identify any key issues that may inhibit transition.
