Summary | We propose a combined experimental and theoretical effort to understand the mechanism of the observed shock-induced reaction in Al/water slurries at NSWC Indian Head. Recovered particles from shock-loaded slurries will be examined with electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and focused ion beam etching to determine possible reaction mechanisms and mechanical damage to the particles. Based on these results, we will develop an analytic theory for the mechanism of damage in gas/water/Al slurries following intense shock loading. Our current hypothesis is that cavitation damage from gas bubbles attached to the surface oxide. If correct, there should be significant post-mortem evidence of cavitation damage on the particles observable via electron microscopy. |
