Summary High Energy Laser (HEL) performance can be significantly affected by optical turbulence, which can lead to break-up and wander of a laser beam, potentially limiting the range and effectiveness of a ship-based HEL weapon system. The purpose of this proposed effort is to take measurements and improve characterization and forecasting models of optical turbulence in the lower atmosphere in order to enhance HEL performance prediction capabilities. This project will be a collaboration with SPAWAR SSC Pacific, in support of ONR HEL research and development.
