Summary This research, working in conjunction with ongoing NPS and MCWL efforts examining Expeditionary Advance Base Operations (EABO), will examine SOF-MAGTF Capabilities Integration in a future Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO). This effort will focus on exploring, assessing and identifying SOF-MAGTF capabilities integration to improve current and future EABO operations and analyze and identify mechanisms that will allow MARSOC to better serve as a bridge for capabilities integration with SOF and deployed MAGTFs to fully maximize the complementary capabilities of each formation. This research will be conducted with multiple Joint Campaign Analysis (JCA) and Wargaming Applications courses.

Phase 1 consists of NPS student team mini-studies from the Joint Campaign Analysis course to inform and underpin the design and conduct of this program of research. These studies will focus on concepts in integrating the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) /Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Forces Liaison Element (SOFLE), the global SOF network and other capabilities into a South China Sea and MCWL EABO scenario to identify potential capabilities and concepts. Phase 2 will include a NPS faculty-advised student wargaming team in the Wargaming Applications course that will design, develop, conduct, and analyze a wargame that leverages the findings from the Phase I JCA effort. Phase 3 includes a second series of JCA mini-studies capitalizing on capabilities and concepts from Phases 1 and 2, along with additional injects designated by MARSOC. This effort will conduct exploratory employment of these capabilities and concepts under the DMO concept and provide a refined quantitative assessment of its effectiveness against a growing maritime power. This phase includes a second student developed wargame providing a more in-depth examination of emerging SOF-MAGTF DMO concepts and an assessment of future capacities and capabilities enabled by SOF-MAGTF integration.
