Summary | Surface Warfare Officers face unique and ever-changing challenges and situations as part of their daily operations. These war-fighters must be able to stay alert, continue to perform operational requirements and make critical decisions under conditions of high stress. Anticipating and training for all possible scenarios is neither practical nor feasible. Instead, war-fighters must develop the physiological and psychological tools that are required for them to adapt to and cope with these high stress situations while maintaining the highest possible level of performance. Stress exposure training, or Stress Inoculation Training (SIT), uses controlled stress exposure during training activities to improve future performance under high stress conditions. The purpose of SIT is to familiarize the individual with their own physiological and psychological responses to high stress conditions, decrease their subjective appraisal of stress, reduce the physiological perturbations caused by stress, and improve performance under conditions of stress. This study will evaluate different stress inducing methods and determine the methods that are most appropriate for Navy training scenarios. The information derived from this study will be used to develop a training program specifically designed to prepare students for high stress environments in an operational setting. |
