Back In-Situ Molecular Diagnostics for Heterogeneous Polymer Composites

Summary The goal of this program is to improve the fundamental understanding of energy distribution and temperature within a shocked, heterogeneous polymer/solid composite. A combination of in-situ chemical sensors, high-speed optical diagnostics, computational modeling, and controlled shock experiments will be used in this multidisciplinary program to improve our overall understanding of dynamic loading and mesoscale variations in material response. Our chemical synthesis efforts are focused on developing in-situ molecular stress and temperature sensors integrated directly into the polymer blend with minimal impact on the response of the material. Sensors will be calibrated and tested initially on lab-based laser shock methods and transitioned to full-scale gas gun shots of heterogeneous polymer/grain mixtures.
