Summary The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) began conducting research on the effectiveness and utility of the use of the HF spectrum as part of an OPNAV N2/N6 sponsored NRP project. A deliverable of the research project was establishment of a lab environment to conduct HF research at NPS, for use by students, faculty and as part of ongoing Fleet needs for updating the technology, CONOPS and capabilities of wideband HF. The sponsor for follow on work is SPAWAR PMW 170, which is very interested in creating an HF range for experimentation of the use of future HF wideband capabilities, and exploring the potential of HF in polar communications. Currently, the HF lab is sited on the roof of Spanagel Hall, and has been tested in Trident Warrior 17 this past summer, communicating directly with a DDG in transit down the west coast, and with SPAWAR in San Diego. Discussions with SPAWAR PMW 170 POCs include the updates needed (legacy and new HF radios and antennas), positioning of equipment, and experimentation objectives. NPS faculty has been providing this capability in a not-to-interfere basis for the purpose of creating a capability worth of a funding proposal. A high interest project is currently underway between OSD and PMW 170 for a proof of concept demonstration. The NPS HF lab is a critical component of this project.
