Summary This project develops a state-of-the-art capability to support EM propagation forecasting in support of US Navy and US Marine Corps operations. Current AREPS forecast for EM propagation relies on operational CO AMPS for environmental parameter forecast. Since CO AMPS is a 3-D mesoscale model, increasingly finer horizontal and vertical resolution significantly increases the computational cost, making operational forecast unfeasible to complete. We propose a new hybrid approach to integrate COAMPS operational forecast with COAMPS single column model (SCM). Our plan is to develop, test, evaluate, and validate improvements of this hybrid forecast system using measurements from multiple field projects where appropriate measurements of environmental quantities were made for model testing/validation purpose. The outcome of this development will be an improved environmental forecast system that is effective in capturing the various vertical gradients of temperature and moisture as input to an APM. We will also test an ensemble EM propagation forecast to take into account the large variability of the environmental parameters in the atmospheric boundary layer.
