Summary During war fighting scenarios where the enemy denies legacy C2 paths or when use of legacy C2 may compromise the location of our forces having another source of communication that has LPI/LPD is ideal. A way of sending small amounts of data such that communication is difficult to detect may be by embedding the desired signal into a carrier signal similar in nature to stenography. Examples of naturally occurring signals could be animals such as a Whale, out at sea, or a Crab in littoral waters. This research will survey the dependencies related to acoustic underwater communication and using strategies of stenography in carrier signals hope to model the process in order to determine best outcomes, that is highest possible data rates, best carrier signals which may be related to physical location in terms of deep sea vs. littoral, and developing a measure of the probability of detection.
