Back On-Orbit System Identification and Slew Maneuver for Flexible Spacecraft

Summary The objective of the research is to develop and evaluate control and trajectory optimization techniques for large angle slew maneuvers of a flexible spacecraft. The research emphasis will be focused on finding an efficient and robust control and trajectory optimization method for complex spacecraft maneuvers to enhance the acquisition and pointing performance. For agile spacecraft, large angle slew maneuver requires careful design of the slew trajectories, and the problem is further complicated with the control moment gyroscope singularities and flexibility of the spacecraft. During the proposed work period, we will apply various optimization schemes, such as, direct transcription and nonlinear programming, sequential linear programming, control parameterization, and genetic algorithm, to the slew trajectory optimization of flexible spacecraft with control moment gyroscopes. The feasibility, robustness, and computational efficiencies of these algorithms will be also evaluated. The proposed method will be also implemented on the Bifocal Relay Mirror Spacecraft simulator.
