Back Application of 802.16 OFDM Point to Multi-Point Wireless Network Topology in Support of Intra-Strike Group and Littoral Operations

Summary This research is intended to test and evaluate the feasibility of integrating Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies into US and coalition afloat, littoral, and amphibious IP communication systems. Such technologies are quickly maturing and hold a great deal of promise in assisting US and coalition forces with more rapid dissemination of information in a world increasing dependent upon IP communications for operational and tactical functions. In additional, these technologies could greatly reduce satellite bandwidth requirements by directing "internal" communications to IP paths created by 802.16 communication links providing high bandwidth communications links, internal to the strike group, for a variety of IP communication needs, including, but not limited to, IP services, VTC, VoIP services, tactical data sharing (i.e. CEC, GCCS-M, etc.), and coalition IP services.
The technologies included in this research proposal are 802.16 orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) point to multi-point networking, internet protocol (IP) video mounted vehicular security cameras, wearable IP cameras, and ultra-wide band integrated sensors. The overall network topology will focus on enhancing end-user knowledge and increasing the communication capabilities of those involved in the strike group and littoral operations.
This topology will be analyzed in an operational context to include baseline tests in Camp Roberts, California and scenario exercises with coalition forces in Chang Mai, Thailand and Australia in support of exercise TALISMAN SABRE 07.
