Back Rupture Dynamics, Validation of the Numerical Simulation Method

The objective of the work is to develop and validate methods and tools to better understand earthquakes and reduce associated risks. Naval Postgraduate School’s Dr. Kozdon specializes in both numerical methods and earthquake rupture dynamics simulations. He has developed HPC codes which will be leveraged for this work.
USC’s Southern California Earthquake Center has expertise in developing a comprehensive understanding of Earthquakes in Southern California and elsewhere, and communicating useful knowledge for reducing earthquake risk.
The collaborators will develop state-of-the-art numerical methods for earthquake rupture dynamics simulations and apply these methods to understand outstanding issues related to the earthquake energy balance and scaling laws. In addition, the work will validate the existing and future rupture dynamics codes through simulation comparisons. The validation work will increase confidence in the codes as well as identify errors.
