Summary |
With the military's adoption of distributed operations and the increased focus on field-based intelligence cells, there exists an ever present need for lower-level units to collect and analyze massive amounts of data in their area of operation. Unfortunately, all too often, data are collected manually without systematic formatting or structure and with little thought to the downstream task of fusing data to create a common operational picture. Additionally, storage of data is often haphazard so that data are often overlooked or forgotten and in some cases lost in rotations. The military needs better data collection, management and analytic capability in the field; LIGHTHOUSE is the ground collection platform that underpins that capability. This project field tests and supports implementation of the LIGHTHOUSE in Afghanistan. The purpose of this research is to develop a field-based collection and management system that uses commercially available software and hardware to gather and analyze data about the human and geo-spatial terrain. |
