Summary | This proposal is for funding to determine the feasibility of performing crack repair on submarine control surfaces by underwater FSW of HY-80 steel. FSW will be conducted on 6.3mm (0.25in) thick HY-80 steel sheet in a dry condition as well as underwater in a laboratory environment using facilities that have been successfully used to conduct FSW of selected plain carbon and low alloy steels. Microstructures and microstructure-mechanical property relationships will be established for the HY-80 material after FSW. |
