Back Energy Saving Technologies on Surface Ship Power and Propulsion Exhaust Systems
Fiscal Year | 2013 |
Division | Graduate School of Engineering & Applied Science |
Department | Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering |
Investigator(s) | Millsaps, Jr., Knox T. |
Sponsor | Office of Naval Research (Navy) |
Summary | This project supports the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Code 33 effort's to develop technology to reduce energy usage on U.S. Navy Naval Surface Combatants. A wind tunnel facility at the Naval Postgraduate School will be modified and upgraded to test alternative inlet and exhaust designs to reduce losses and increase reliability. These funds will also support student thesis research in energy saving technologies for ship-board use as part of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy Curriculum at NPS. These projects also support the cost analysis program at NPS (Dr. Dan Nussbaum and Dr. Eva Regnier) and with Mr. Glen Sturtevant from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for candidate implementation of surface combatants. The preliminary cost studies will evaluate Return of Investment (RoI) for various instillation alternatives. During the year, NPS will work with industry to solicit improved designs for exhaust systems in general, and enhanced mixing suppressors, such as vortex (aka daisy) mixers. |
