Summary Microgrids are being evaluated for use in Navy facilities to reduce cost of renewable energy and energy storage integration. Current microgrid topologies are cost inefficient, requiring multiple application-specific converter designs. Solid state transformers (SSTs) offer a cost-effective solution for microgrid implementation. We propose to investigate the implementation of a SST design for a microgrid investigation currently underway at Port Hueneme. A study o f converter topologies, component design and system cost optimization will be carried out. Novel transistors technology using wide bandgap semiconductor materials, specifically GaN, will be used implement the SST design. End state deliverables will include successful implementation of an SST design in the Port Hueneme microgrid. The period of performance for this project covers FY 2014 to FY 2016.
