Summary Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories is the Lockheed Martin Corporation's advanced-computing and applied research and development facility. In 2008, LMCO ATL was contracted to develop a framework to help small teams of naval operators manage groups of unmanned in complex mission environment. LMCO ATL's Supervision of Unmanned Mission Management by Interactive Teams (SUMMIT) program creates and environment that allows an operator sitting at a single console to simultaneously work on many different tasks involving multiple systems. The system was developed initially as part of a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mine Countermeasures mission package, but the system has the potential to expand into other mission packages and be applied to other platforms.
The Naval Postgraduate School conducts extensive research that supports the DoD's increasing utilization of unmanned systems to accomplish offensive mission sets with a special interest in swarm unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tactics. In addition, NPS is examining concepts and tactics to counter adversarial unmanned systems attacks. NPS has extended the Research Environment for Supervisory Control of Heterogeneous Unmanned Vehicles (RESCHU) simulation tool to study these Swarm Attack (SA) problems, to produce (RESCHU-SA).
This collaboration will lay the of a prototype system combining and RESCHU-SA. The goal is to groundwork for the creation the capabilities of SUMMIT be able to demonstrate how workload can be balanced across a naval watch team using the Lockheed Martin ATL's SUMMIT systems in a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) based mission involving unmanned vehicles. This initial effort is limited to the integration work; prototype testing is expected to be conducted in a follow-on effort.
