Summary | This proposal proposes a new family of modular-oriented MV multi-level converters, namely three-level hybrid modular multilevel converter (THMMC) which combines a simple three-level structure with the switching-module (SM) based phase-arms. For instance, the diode-based THMMC (D-THMMC), as one of the topology variants, presents a significant saving of volume, cost and power losses as well as the improvement of reliability compared with the status-of-the-art modular multilevel converter (MMC) solution in MV applications. The intellectual merits of the proposed solution will make a strong impact on a broad range of MV power conversion applications, like renewable energy grid-integration, subsea and offshore dc power delivery, naval MVDC power system, industrial variable speed drives, and transportation high-speed electric propulsion system |
