Summary |
The radar observations have the characteristics of high spatial resolution and rapid update rate which are capable of resolving storm structures on fine spatial and time scales and capturing storm evolutions timely. However, the radar observed data are generally in the form of reflectivity and radial velocity, which cannot be incorporated directly into a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. Therefore, retrieval procedures are required to assimilate radar data into an NWP. The radar data assimilation system (RDAS) developed at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) for the Navy's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS(R)) includes the data retrievals and assimilations. The objective of the RDAS development is to improve the COAMPS(R) performance by providing finer resolution of the initial conditions and more frequent updates of the weather system evolutions. |
