Back Portable X-Ray Diffraction for Residual Stress Measurements Aboard Naval Vessels

Summary | This proposal is for funding to determine the feasibility of performing x-ray diffraction-based measurements of residual stress aboard naval vessels. Laboratory X-ray diffraction measurements will be made along welds in aluminum plate materials used in the superstructures of CG-47 cruisers. These measurements will be repeated using commercial, portable x-ray diffraction instruments to assess the ability of these instruments to quickly, accurately, and reliably measure the residual stresses in aluminum structures. In addition, the particular logistical requirements for performing these measurements aboard ship will be investigated. The result of this study will be a technical and logistical evaluation of the portable x-ray diffraction approach to residual stress measurement aboard ship. |
