Back Reliability Studies of Carbon Nanotubes in Proton Environments

Summary The Naval Postgraduate School will investigate the implementation of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) in semiconductor processes is outlined in the Semiconductor Technology Roadmap for use in interconnects and device channels. NPS has worked with Lockheed Martin to investigate degradation of the Nantero FET structure. Recent capability by our team to perform the highest atomic resolution imaging of the CNT in fabric material provides opportunity to examine the CNT on an Alumina substrate to understand degradation mechanisms. We are interested to understand the interaction of CNTs with high energy protons (>30MeV). NPS students would perform radiation experiments, measure electrical degradation and assist in atomic resolution imaging of the CNT on the substrate. This work should provide valuable knowledge on basic changes in atomic structure and electrical properties in critical space environments.
