Summary | As the Navy moves forward with development and deployment of directed energy (DE) weapons, there is an urgent need to fully understand the shipboard energy required to take full advantage of future DE capabilities. A number of factors contribute to the energy needs of DE weapons. These include the DE weapon system type, the operational use (including the types and numbers of threats, and the threat kinematics and proximity), the atmospheric and environmental conditions, and the effects of ship turbulence. These highly situational-dependent factors impact the dwell time, and therefore, amount of energy, required to complete a DE engagement. This project will review existing literature, studies, and models to understand the current state of knowledge and to identify any knowledge gaps. The project will develop an ontology model of the contributing factors and their impact on the shipboard energy needs of DE weapons. The study will develop DE weapon energy requirements and parameters. |
