Summary | DoD has become increasingly reliant on space-based systems to provide Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) information required for deployed DoD air, ground, and naval forces to command, control, and communicate with elements of their subordinate operational formations. With this reliance comes vulnerability-if the capabilities that these space-based systems provide are interrupted, perturbed, or eliminated (through what is termed "denial of service" attacks), the DoD operational forces that use these capabilities will be less-capable or possibly incapable of performing their assigned missions. At this juncture, there has not been sufficient research conducted to understand the extent of the impact of such service denial on the operational capabilities of US forces. Furthermore, until such an understanding is developed, the research needed to develop mitigation strategies on such denial of service attacks cannot be conducted. This effort will focus on developing the tools needed to set the stage for studying this issue. |
