Summary The Field Information Support Tool (FIST), which originated at NPS, is an Android-based smart phone/tablet solution for Information Management (collection, fusion, visualization, analysis & dissemination). FIST is used to disseminate unclassified data via 3-G cellular, wireless protocol, OPS-enabled SMS text messaging, and satellite uplink to a web portal. FIST supports information-driven operations with real-time reporting, shared situational awareness, sensor fusion, and incisive analytical tools.
This project would adapt FIST capabilities to the Consortium for Robotics & Unmanned Systems Education and Research (CRUSER) and maritime security mission environment, enabling crowdsourced data collection, aggregation, visualization, and analysis.
The initial technical objective is to develop a new information system web crawler that will mine and ingest selected social media and crowd sourced data across various platforms. This capability will be integrated FIST's ability to access data from other multi-variable sources. The ultimate end-goal of the research proposal is to develop a system that can effectively produce accurate early warning notifications that lead to saved lives with minimal resource depletion.
