Summary The Southern California Behavioral Response Study (SOCAL BRS) is an at-sea study of the effects of naval sonar on marine mammals. This is a large, collaborative project amongst several institutions including SEA Inc., Cascadia Research Collective, St Andrews University, NUWC, NOAA SW Fisheries and SPAWAR. NPS has been a collaborating institution since its inception (2010) and this proposal requests funding to continue participation in the project.
Specifically, NPS proposes to continue its effort through the following two tasks: (1) continue development of the RL model field tool that can be used in real time in support of SOCAL BRS field exercises and (2) validation of the RL model performance as measured against in-situ acoustic tag data. NPS will focus its developmental work on improving robust functionality of the decision aid, and validating/tuning acoustic performance with model-data comparisons.
