Summary | Anti-Submarine (or undersea) Warfare (and potentially Mine Warfare, MIW) are two proposed mission areas in which a persistent platform is needed to perform duties that can largely be automated with sensors and electronic means for C2. The US Navy has been experimenting with other mission areas (e.g., force protection using autonomous RHIB, some with defensive weapons capabilities) for some time. The technical advances in sensors, software and autonomous maneuvering have made it practical for more advanced mission areas. An experimental vessel is being constructed and will soon be available for testing in the Pt. Loma area of San Diego. |
