Summary The objective of this project is to explore and advance how the full range of technologies that support Virtual Environments (VE) can help the Navy and DoD in multiple domains ranging from training to system design and configuration. The core technology that underlies all VEs is an efficient way to represent 3D spaces in computers and processes and systems that allow for effective interaction with and manipulation of such data. This entails not just the traditional 3D display capabilities, but also ways to efficiently collect real world data, store, catalogue, share and manipulate it. The objective of this project is twofold. First, to explore how these technologies can be better utilized in this broad range of applications by looking for those aspects of these domains that overlap. For example, having an accurate representation of spaces inside ships is critical for good training and also for configuration management of those spaces. If ways can be found to collect and share this information that can be used both by the training and ship maintenance communities, significant efficiencies can be realized. The second objective is to leverage the creative potential of the NPS student body to help discover new and unique ways to employ these cutting edge technological developments. The students at NPS bring together a rare combination of military operational experience with current, advanced technical knowledge. This combination often allows them to see powerful solutions to important problems that can only be seen from the unique perspective that this divers experience offers. The intent of this project is to foster this creativity by exploring how relevant student class and thesis work can be supported.
