Summary This proposal, through an extensive review of the literature and the development of a theoretical model of the interaction between corruption, violence, and economic development, aims to develop knowledge and algorithms to more accurately represent the influence of corruption in the irregular warfare environment. The first objective of this project is to survey the economics, political science, and sociology literature as to the determinants and outcomes of corruption. Building upon the first objective, the second objective seeks to construct a theoretical model (or models) of corruption, to include a model that explicitly incorporates the indirect effects of corruption on economic development and security. Finally, the third objective of this project is to assist in developing metrics to quantify corruption at the tactical and operational levels to help foster tools for advising commanders on corruption's influence in irregular warfare environments.
