Knowledge-based organizations are often able to reap benefits such as increased innovation, better decision making, and efficient exchange of best practices (Alavi, Kayworth, & Leidner, 2005). TRAC desires to gain such benefits from its Knowledge Management System and is looking for avenues to better understand how to build their collaborative capacity. One approach to understanding and analyzing knowledge sharing is through social network analysis (Miani, Zachariadis, Obern & Barrett, 2012). SNA measures patterns of interconnections among organizational members. The networks provide numerous measurements that can be useful tools for management such as network structure, actor’s network positions, and means of communication among ties. These measures can be tracked over time in conjunction with various interventions to identify the effectiveness of knowledge sharing initiatives.
This research project aims to develop a proof of concept for using social network analysis (SNA) as a means of tracking knowledge sharing at TRAC.
