Summary |
This is the $200,000 study requested in the attached proposal. The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Physics department, as part of the larger ONR funded Solid State Laser (SSL) program effort, shall study and report on two efforts under FY15 funding: A) Examine analytical computational models sensitivities related to weather conditions and resulting potential effect on lethality/range estimates for SSLs at power levels from thirty (30), up to five hundred (500) kilowatts, for specific, identified mission sets. Included as part of the FY15 effort, available experimental data will be collected and compared to these predictions. Costs associated with weather (Wx) forecasting and real-time Wx data from the Naval Research Laboratory (Monterey, Dr. Westphal) are included with the funding provided to NPS. Such modeling (via analytical codes known as COAMPS and LEEDR) shall examine sensitivity of atmospheric characterization for SSLs. And, B) Study electro-mechanical power systems stability on a DDG-51 flight IIA class AEGIS Destroyer with the addition of either one, or two, SSL weapon(s). Discrete power levels from thirty (30), up to five hundred (500) kilowatts will be used to determine potential energy storage impact and needs against size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints. Costs for any analytical models previously developed by the University of Texas, Center for Electromechanics (UT/CEM) are included, and if funded, shall be used to study the potential effects on ship electrical distribution and stability. |
