Back Countering Adversarial Unmanned Systems: Live-Fly Experimentation with Aerial Combat Swarms

Summary This proposed effort seeks to expand the scope of extensive ongoing student and faculty research in the area of countering unmanned systems to include a robust field experimentation capability. Leveraging efforts in the Advanced Robotic Systems Engineering Laboratory (ARSENL) and its collaborative Aerial Combat Swarms project, this proposal extends prior modeling, simulation, and analysis studies performed by the Principal Investigator and his research team by accelerating the design, implementation, and deployment of live-fly UAV platforms to validate these studies and other future concepts in field experiments.
The proposed effort explores opportunities to significantly leverage open source technologies, e.g., vibrant open source software communities for robot operating systems and active development for open hardware designs for UAV autopilots, as well as commercial and government-off-the shelf (COTS and GOTS) products, to ensure that the research focus of the testbed specifically highlights concept development and demonstration of advancing the state-of-the-art in counter unmanned systems tactics and their associated autonomy algorithms. Additional aligned topics include research thrusts in mission-level autonomy, human-robot interactions, bio-inspired tactics (such as swarming and active herding), test and evaluation methodologies for unmanned systems, and even policy implications for employment of swarming unmanned systems in modern warfare.
