Summary UAS operations in the fleet have been increasing dramatically. There is a need to operationalize UASs on both flight deck and non-flight deck equipped Navy/Coast Guard surface assets. UAS operations are currently tethered to radar/air domain controller requirements. Being able to untether these operations presents an evolutionary leap in our surface fleet's maritime domain awareness capability. Different vessel types may require different classes of UAS & will have different launch/recovery capabilities. Using a DOTMLPF-P analysis and simulation of ship based UAS operations in operational scenarios, we expect to find out if untethered UAS operations can occur, determine what classes of UASs are the best fit for various vessel types, address employment strategies and their impact, and gain insight as to what missions UASs can assume from manned aircraft. We expect to find by researching UASs, conducting a DOTMLPF-P analysis on our collected data, and putting some of our findings into two simulation courses at the Naval Postgraduate School, that decisions can be made on the way ahead for ship based UASs.
