Summary The objective of this research proposal is to construct state-of-the-art numerical methods for developing a storm-surge model. This project is in collaboration with Prof. Randy LeVeque from the University of Washington. Both NPS and UW will develop independent storm-surge models but will then validate the codes against each other. We intend to work closely in order to share technologies. The NPS code is based on the discontinuous Galerkin method on triangles while the UW code is based on finite volumes on quadrilaterals. Both codes will use adaptive mesh refinement and will use state-of-the-art time-integration methods. Finally, both NPS and UW will receive real hurricane wind data from the Naval Research Laboratory that will be used to force our coastal ocean models.
