Overview

Naval Academy Grad-1964; spent 36 years active duty as a Nuclear Submariner retiring as a Rear Admiral; commanded two Nuclear Subs, commanded a Submarine Squadron of 10 Nuclear Attack Subs, commanded Submarine Group Ten which included all Nuclear Missile Submarines in the Atlantic, commanded all U.S. Submarines in the Pacific (COMSUBPAC 1996-1998), served as Oceanographer of the Navy. After retiring from active duty, became a member of the Navy's Senior Executive Service (SES-5) and served as director of a highly classified program for 8 years followed by serving as the Undersea Warfare Advisor for the Secretary of the Navy for two years, then came to NPS to be the Chair for Undersea Warfare (2009 to present).

Research Interests
Serves as the Director of the Undersea Warfare Research Center. Major efforts are being made to bring research projects from the Navy, other government agencies, industry, laboratories, and other academic institutions to NPS
Teaching Interests
Undersea Warfare - Teaches the course UW 2002 concerning Undersea Warfare - Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow - concentrating on the history of Submarine Warfare, Sub-Sea Warfare, and Anti-Submarine Warfare emphasizing how the warfare has changed over the years and where we are today in the Navy and what the challenges are.
