Overview

Dr. Miriam Bergue Alves joined Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) as a faculty associate research in June 2019 and reports to the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs. She has served in various research and technical positions in government and academia. Currently she develops and leads initiatives in educational research such as program evaluation and curriculum development, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance alignment between essential competencies and educational outcomes. Her efforts are dedicated to fortifying educational programs by bridging the divide between existing offerings and the requisite competencies, all while maintaining academic rigor and a keen eye on practical workforce applicability.
She is one of the technical leads of the Regional Defense Fellowship Program Evaluation Project, in partnership with Global ECCO (Education Collaboration Community Online), focused on evaluation efforts of security cooperation programs under the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. She was also the system engineering lead in some educational projects, developing requirements and designing structural architectures. Before joining NPS, Miriam worked for more than 10 years as a critical-safety software systems developer and researcher, with emphasis on requirements specification, formal verification & validation, and testing of mission-critical software, conducting research projects to bridge the gap between academia and real practice. As a postdoctoral fellow at NPS, she was able to use a new formal technique to verify and validate real-time requirements of a space software system, showing the actual efficiency of the proposed academic technique to improve the system’s dependability.
