NPS Prepares for Upcoming PRT

By MC2 Brian Abel

Fitness & Sports Director of Monterey Bay Athletic Club Naval Support Activity (NSA) Monterey Marley Oldham and her staff prepare the gym for the upcoming Physical Readiness Test (PRT). The upcoming PRT, which will take place during the week of Oct. 23.

“The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) is conducted to ensure sailors meet the minimum physical requirements to serve in the United States Navy,” said NPS Command Fitness Leader Lt. Cmdr. Vince Naccarato. “All Navy personnel, active and reserve, must take the PFA twice a year unless they obtain a waiver or exception approved by their commanding officer.”

Prior to being eligible to participate, service members must ensure all of their medical documents are in order.

“A valid Physical Health Assessment (PHA) is required to begin the PRT. Those with an expired PHA will not be allowed to start the PRT until a valid date shows up in PRIMS or they can show proof of a current PHA,” said Naccarato.

If any member fails any portion of the PRT or Body Composition Assessment (BCA) they will be enrolled into FEP however, the Monterey Bay Athletic Club staff will offer services ranging from personal training to classes that focus on PRT improvement exercises.

“While you’re here at NPS and NSA Monterey, we want to do everything that we can to ensure that you’re ready to go back out into the fleet when your time here is done,” said NPS Fitness Enhancement Coordinator (FEP) Henry Chu. “We are proud advocates of the Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling system also known as NOFFS that we offer here.”

Naccarato added that the full PRT, including all cardio options except swimming, will be offered four times a day from Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 and the swim portion of the PRT will only be available Friday at the Monterey Sports Center pool at 2:00 p.m.

“Given the vast number of members with a wide range of schedules here at NPS, there are several opportunities to complete the BCA and PRT,” said Naccarato. “During the week of 23 Oct., members may stop by the NSA Gym at their convenience on Monday or Tuesday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to complete the BCA.”
