Defense Analysis Students Honor Their Teacher Through Donation to DKL

By MC2 Patrick Dionne

Students from NPS’ Department of Defense Analysis technical writing course presented a unique painting to the university’s Dudley Knox Library, May 24. The artwork, inspired by the poem “Take a Moment, was presented in honor of their course instructor, senior lecturer George Lober, recognizing his nearly 20 years of service to NPS.

“We hope to leave a permanent reminder with NPS of the impact that he has had on the student body over the years, not just for the military but for the community as a whole,” said Army Maj. Ian MacGregor, one of Lober’s students from his final class. “We chose this poem because it very intimately addresses what it means to not only be a student, but a military service member.”

Lober, who retired this year, began his career at NPS in 1997, serving as a senior lecturer for courses on technical writing and ethical decision-making. He is also the author of two books of poetry, “Shift of Light” (Hummingbird Press, 2002), and “A Bridge to There” (Hummingbird Press, 2009).

“I can’t express enough the sincere thanks I have for everyone in my last class, and everyone involved in presenting me with this amazing honor,” said Lober. “It is incredibly humbling to know that one of my works will be placed alongside the works of such amazing scholars.”

The painting was created by calligrapher Cheryl Cary, the mother-in-law of MacGregor, whose husband Steve Cary is a retired Army Major and former graduate of NPS.

“I think that this is such a wonderful tribute to scholarship and knowledge and paying it forward,” said Eleanor Uhlinger, University Librarian. “I am very proud to accept this on behalf of the library for all future students and visitors to see. This is a legacy of knowledge, and that is what NPS is all about.”
