Concerts on the Lawn Returns to Hotel Del Monte

By Melinda Larson, NSAM Public Affairs

Some 400-plus guests lounged on the grass in front of Hotel Del Monte to hear the diverse sounds of the “Monterey County Pops” and “The Money Band” as Concerts on the Lawn returned to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Monterey, Oct. 22. Organizers of the music fest worked for months to bring back the event previously conducted on Memorial Day.

“It’s part of our outreach to bring the community back onto the grounds of the historic Hotel Del Monte,” said Kyle Rhodus, NSA Monterey Quality of Life Director.

While the community listened to the music, they dined on everything from bratwurst to pulled pork to clam chowder in a bread bowl.

“We tried to appeal to everyone’s tastes,” Rhodus added.  “This event will help us set the stage for the next Concert on the Lawn we’re planning for Memorial Day 2018.”

Concert on the Lawn kicks off a season of events open to the community.  The Barbara McNitt Ballroom will be open both Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day with special meals open to the public. A ‘pièce de résistance’ will end the holiday season and the year at the historic hotel.

“We’re having a New Year’s Eve Gala that’s a flashback to the old Hotel Monte, and we hope members of the community can join us,” Rhodus said.  “We are part of the community, and it’s important for the community to know we’re part of it.”
