JIFX

The FX program exists to provide an opportunity for NPS faculty and students to demonstrate and evaluate new technologies related to the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense research in an operational field environment, and also to provide the operational community the opportunity to experiment with these technologies to better understand the capabilities that they may represent.

We provide a realistic field environment wirh airspace, buildings, tunnels, forests and open plains

You provide an emerging technology to address challenges faces by the US Military Forces

Together we collaborate and learn about challenges your technology may address!

The Naval Postgraduate School is proud to celebrate the 15th year of Field Experimentation. The FX program exists to provide an opportunity for NPS faculty and students to engage with industry, academia and the warfighter in a field environment. It also provides the opportunity for these institutions to learn, through experimentation with emerging technologies, the way forward to apply these technologies to national security challenges.

Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) 18-3 hosted 23 experiments at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Field Laboratory at McMillan Airfield, Camp Roberts. Over 280 researchers and developers from 85 unique government, private, and academic organization participate in this event, that included a focus on larger (group 2 & 3) unmanned air systems to provide persistent multi-purpose support to military, disaster response and humanitarian operations.

The event also expanded the emphasis on cyber security for emerging technologies with “good cyber hygiene” being emphasized in all experimentation efforts.

Commencing the 15th year of NPS Field Experimentation, JIFX 18-2 hosted 18 experiments from 26 February to 2 March, at Camp Roberts, the California National Guard’s premier Maneuver Training Center. The NPS field experimentation program conducts quarterly collaborative experimentation to help the Department of Defense, other government agencies, andstate and local governments incorporate emerging technology into their operations. Over 180 researchers and developers from 77 government, private, and academic organizations participated in this cycle, which was focused on the impact of unmanned and autonomous systems on wildfire fighting operations and support. Experiments ranged from information security in diverse and ad hoc networks, to three-dimensional visualizations of operating areas, and to the use of unmanned ground and air vehicles for precisely locating hazardous material. Planning has already begun for the next experimentation cycle. JIFX 18-3 will be held 4-8 June and will focus on the use of larger (group 2 & 3) unmanned air systems to provide persistent multi-purpose support to military, disaster response, and humanitarian operations.
