For your grocery needs including Kosher, the Safeway at 815 Canyon Del Rey, Del Rey Oaks, California, is accessible by bus, car or taxi. There is also Trader Joe’s in Monterey at 570 Munras Avenue. Trader Joe’s is accessible by bus or car and is within 1.7 miles walking distance

For Halal groceries, there are two local possibilities:

  • The Asian market, 3056 Del Monte Boulevard, Suite #103, Marina
  • California and the International Market and Deli at 580 Lighthouse Avenue, Monterey, California

Both are accessible by car or taxi. Walking is possible, but it is a bit of a hike. The #10 MST bus will get you near the Asian Market and #2 will take you directly to the International Market and Deli.

A Note on Tipping:

https://www.clickondining.com/

Tipping is a part of American Culture, while not mandatory, it can be somewhat confusing. In general, 15% of the actual meal cost is expected for an individual. What is mandatory is the gratuity for groups of six or more. There is an automatic tip included in the bill and it can range from 18% to 25% of the bill depending on the restaurant

Monterey Salinas Transit (MST) - local and regional bus transportation

https://mst.org/

MST Bus #24 also known as the Carmel Valley Grapevine Express will get you to Carmel, 18 minutes from the Monterey Transit Plaza located in downtown Monterey at 500 Tyler Street (the corner of East Pearl St. and Tyler St.), approximately 1 mile/1.6 km walking distance from outside the gate at NPS.

The free Monterey Salinas Transit (MST) trolley is one of the best ways to get around the city and avoid parking when going from Downtown Monterey to Cannery Row and back.

The Monterey Air Bus - airport transportation

https://www.montereyairbus.com/
Scheduled bus transportation from downtown Monterey to San Jose International Airport (SJC) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and vice versa. Note: the Air Bus does not serve Monterey Airport (MRY).

AMTRAK - passenger train service

https://www.amtrak.com/
Intra-California and long distance train service is available from the AMTRAK station in nearby Salinas.

Yellow Cab - taxi cab company

https://www.yellowcab1234.com/

Yellow Cab is not the only taxi in town, but it is the only taxi permitted to come onto campus unescorted.  ALL TAXI CABS ARE SUBJECT TO INSPECTION before entry onto the installation.  Taxi cab drivers are not authorized to charge special fares in exchange for providing service onboard installations.  However, it should be expected that the meter will run during the time spent waiting for and during the inspection when entering the base with a passenger.  When picking up a passenger, the meter starts when the passenger enters the taxi. Remember to ASK ABOUT THE FARE to your destination before you depart.

Cars can be rented at the Monterey Regional Airport, a list of companies and their contact information is available at the website below (it is recommended to call ahead before going in person)

https://www.montereyairport.com/post/car-rental

There is an Enterprise Car Rental within walking distance of the school. 1178 del Monte Avenue, Monterey, California, 93940. As this establishment is not located at the airport, their return policy may be different.  Ask about return policy and actual day that vehicle can be returned.

The Monterey Bay Athletic Club (the fitness center located on base at the NPS) rents bicycles by the day, weekend, or week.

In addition, there are several private businesses in town that rent bicycles.

Mobile Phones

To avoid roaming fees while using your mobile phone in the U.S., it could be beneficial to sign up for a prepaid wireless plan or purchase a new phone to fit your needs. For example, T-Mobile offers a prepaid wireless plan that has an optional international add-on. When shopping for U.S. mobile phone plans, be sure to:

  • Check your current carrier's international roaming options or add-ons
  • Check if your phone is able to accept another SIM, and is compatible, by using carrier compatibility tools and making sure that your phone is unlocked
  • Make sure your country is listed when purchasing 'international services' plan additions

Utilizing prepaid phone cards is also an option for incoming international participants
