Joseph Andrilla attended the University of California, Los Angeles, was commissioned an Ensign, U.S. Navy upon graduation and served on active duty for 30 years. Upon completion of active service, he was employed by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) as Director, Pacific Fleet Operations. He is now a part time faculty member of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) where he serves as a coach and facilitator for strategic management and strategic communication workshops. He also currently serves in two volunteer positions; one at Scripps Memorial Hospital and another as Public Affairs Chair for the San Diego Military Affairs Council.
During his early Navy career as a junior officer, he served in a wide variety of assignments afloat associated with fleet operations and shipboard engineering. Ashore, he served as a junior officer career manager and later at the U.S. Naval Academy in two positions; one on the staff of the Superintendent, the other as an instructor of Economics. Upon promotion to the rank of Commander, he assumed command of USS Towers, a Pacific Fleet guided missile destroyer. Other senior officer assignments included afloat commands as Commander Destroyer Squadron 21 and Commander Destroyer Squadron 2 during which he served as operational and administrative commander and reporting senior for the commanding officers of 25 destroyer type ships. He also served as a major Program Manager at the Naval Sea Systems Command and finally as Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme, CA, a major technical center employing more than 2200 civilian government employees.
Upon completion of his active duty career, in his role as the NGSB Director of Pacific Fleet Operations, he was the senior NGSB representative west of the Mississippi and heavily involved in the life cycle management of Pacific Fleet cruisers and destroyers. He terminated regular employment in January 2007 and has since held consulting, NPS faculty, and volunteer positions.
Mr. Andrilla holds a M.S. degree in Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also attended the Program for Executives at Carnegie-Mellon University and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College. He is a life member of the Surface Navy Association and served on the San Diego Chapter Board of Directors for 14 years.
