Professor Bert Semtner, the recipient of the first Smithsonian-Computerworld Leadership Award for Breakthrough Computational Science in 1993, has been a pioneer in high performance computing and global ocean modeling. An updated version of his parallel ocean model is being readied by the Navy to support Fleet operations and is used by the National Center for Atmospheric Research in climate change studies.
