Indirect Recovery on Contractual Expenditures
Return to Contracting for Support Personnel

The full cost of the support contract if funded from a sponsored project will be subject to the indirect rate for the project.

Requestors must incorporate indirect costs along with contract costs when preparing the project budget, as well as budget page changes. When completing the IGE, it is also necessary to assure the account has sufficient indirect funding available. A template for calculating indirect costs (Excel) for contracts is provided.

Contracts awarded to collaborators are not subject to recovery against the full contract amount. Only the first $25,000 of the contract amount to the collaborator is subject to indirect. A collaborator is normally a person or persons who would be considered a co-PI if an NPS employee. The most common ‘collaborator’ contract is to another university. Another indication of whether a collaborator is if the contractor’s name appears alongside the NPS PI in a peer-reviewed journal article.
